I love a beret, His bow tie is from The Grolier Club of New York, the oldest book club. http://www.grolierclub.org/
ON THE EVENING OF JANUARY 23, 1884, New York printing press manufacturer and book collector Robert Hoe invited to his home eight fellow bibliophiles to discuss the formation of a club devoted to the book arts. Although the nine men differed in age, occupation and social position, they shared the opinion that the arts of printing and typography in late 19th-century America were in need of reform. Hoe and his associates were all involved in the editing, design, production, sale or acquisition of fine books, and his invitation fired their imaginations. They were also men of action, and before the evening ended, a resolution had been adopted specifying the purpose of the organization, a committee had been appointed to choose a name for the group, and another to draft a constitution. Within two weeks, a suggestion that the fledgling organization call itself after the great French bibliophile Jean Grolier (1489/90-1565) had been passed by acclamation, a constitution duly drawn up, and “The Grolier Club of the City of New-York” was a going concern. The object of the Grolier Club (to quote from its Constitution) is “the literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books, including the occasional publication of books designed to illustrate, promote and encourage those arts; and the acquisition, furnishing and maintenance of a suitable club building for the safekeeping of its property, wherein meetings, lectures and exhibitions shall take place from time to time, likewise designed to illustrate, promote and encourage those arts ….” Breaking that description down into its constituent parts, the Grolier Club is, first of all, a fellowship of men and women devoted to books and the graphic arts. The Club currently numbers over 700 members, mostly American, but including a number of English, European, and Asian bibliophiles as well. Membership is by nomination, and recommendations for membership are made on the basis of a candidate’s passion for books, as revealed in his or her activities as a collector, scholar, librarian, printer, or participation in some other bookish pursuit.
It’s spring; time to put our winter gear away but you can still wear a fur-felt hat, and welcome straw.
’bout to go off right now.
Too many fellas have been wearing the worst hats lately. These stingy brimmed hard looking things. Every hat is the same shape, no movement. like my dad’s london fog rain hat. In every possible fabric- plasticy looking white or cream straw hats with generric black bands. The straw hat of yesterday bought while on vacation has been replaced by the $9.99 version at MJ or Canal Street I saw so many during the winter- fools, When you can wear fur felt, {in the cold winter months in NYC}why would one wear a hat that the wind breezes right through? Because you saw Britney or Justin wearing one? LA’sinfluence in NYC is giving me an ulcer.
Don’t tell me you have not been seeing guys wearing t- shirts with scarves…or even gloves and a t-shirt! Or, my least favorite- the tuck… what is going on with guys tucking any pant into almost any footwear?
all winter i saw guys with their skin tight jeans tucked into untied boots.. and a just hoodie or light jacket when it’s snowing! I know we are not in Maine, but we’re sure not in LA LA Land
Everyone should be familiar with fotog. (Back In The Days) Jamel Shabazz. He captured heads in their glory, running the streets and subway cars in their kangol hats, adidas, pumas.. NIKE window displays.. women in high waisted jeans, guys in track suits and the illest eyewear by Gazelle; most wearing the plastic style.
This type was favored by the likes of Harry and a select group of other brave men whom ill post shortly.. yes, there are others!
I’ve run into Sean on numerous occasions, always impeccably dressed. Here while grocery shopping I tried capturing his double breasted wool vest with hand pick stitching, wool challis tie and scarf, both with equestrian themes. I wish the pictures showed their detail better. Please click on the images and perhaps you can make it out.. Sean takes the award for best dressed at RL FW 09.
I like what J Crew is up to. and don’t front. We’ve all been in there-been for a minute. I enjoy a pinstripe with a solid grey.. Very “Morning Suit for taking a stroll to the bank”. Theyre teaching guys it doesnt have to be precious.. Loro Piana fabrics! Thomas Mason shirtings! i mean this is the stuff royalty has their clothes made of but they offer it to the general public with no seals of the queen or anything.. These are the shirtings Turnbull and Thom Browne use!
Alden Indy Boot for J Crew!
Russell Moccasins, I dont think anyone in nyc carries them! Looks like they’ve been in the woods roughed up up a bit before they hit the store. Store, not stores, not everywhere, 1 shop in NYC..
A new style Red Wing boot. Interesting with spery sole!
This showroom always has the best vintage belts (and buckles)! i like that they dont mix in too much vintage, when you see a super vintage looking sweatshirt, they have found a way to make it look genuinely old without making it look mass produced; yet affordable.
If you have not heard of Inverallan- check them. I love old fishermans sweaters but again, hard to find because they last forever..Inverallan has been working with (and doesnt tell you on their website)the likes of Neighborhood and Beams in Japan.. Another great mature non-precious move for the crew..
These shorts might be my favorite item after the cardigan which ill never be able to buy. Id cut them off, to look like old safari shorts. large belt loops..
