Bettina

P5125180
I have seen many women try and wear ties, while most do it better than Avril Levine even if they wear a proper collared shirt, they’ll still mess it up somehow by leaving it untucked or dangling like an orb. I think theres only one way, like a fella. With a vest, suit or just a shirt like Bettina did here. I think they have one thing to their advantage, I think a woman can wear a slightly wider tie (than the young men wear today) sans jacket. I feel like a kid when wearing a tie without a jacket; be it denim or a blazer…

Kurt Hollomon is One Cool Cat

Kurt hit me up a while back and we have been exchanging emails and pleasantries ever since. He very humbly wrote telling me he enjoys drawing the characters on my site. I figured someone who enjoys my subjects and their kits as mush as I do must be cool. Then the mail arrived

Dont be nosy, no reason to read the letter, point is look at that chuck taylor (belonging to his girlfriend Ann who’s pretty fucking rad herself!)
The sketches are exactly what I wish I could doodle!
On his most recent drawing trip to New York (he brings his students along!) to meet with some illustrators and artists/designers I had the honor of finally meeting Kurt. In the short time we had together I flipped through 3 of the heavy books he had carried along and snapped just a few of his amazing sketches.

I searched the world wide web and found some accurate words on Kurt: Habitual sketchbook practitioner—Kurt Hollomon’s work employs the direct observational drawing style that gives his illustrations a sense of reality tempered with a quirky, spirited line. Former Mt. Rainier climbing guide, Kurt has been art director, designer and now illustrator as well as teacher of drawing and illustration at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. A modern day Magellan with a Micron or possibly Lewis or Clark in a Land Rover; bouncing towards the southern tip of Patagonia with a cheese sandwich and bottle of water tossed into a shoulder bag filled with drawing supplies… few artists have been able to capture the beauty, history, and happiness of the outdoor lifestyle as Kurt has. A RUGBY Twist On A Go To Hell Pant

If you are not already familiar with the term Go To Hell Pant, google it.P3252210 These go-to hell pants were made 30+ yrs. ago for Mills-Touche in Tucson. Some close-ups of the print below. Chip2 Chip3 Chip5
And served as inspiration for a short pant version done right by Ralph Lauren’s RUGBY brand. If I were near the store today I’d cop them immediately! !P3252223 P3252224

William Zinsser, A 4th Generation New Yorker in Brooks Brothers & J Press

Jpressscarf2P1310215 For the start of Fashion Week, I thought I would post someone who has been wearing Brooks Brothers & J Press for over 40 years. I photographed William Zinsser in a Brooks Brothers Overcoat, Brooks Brothers oxford shirt, J Press scarf, blazer and tie. He took his glove off to shake my hand. Thats a true gentleman, it was frigid out. He asked what it was that I like about what he was wearing and I told him the classic timelessness of his look. He mentioned he has an oil painting of himself and the artist made the roll in the collar very clear in the painting! No one spots them like I do. I did some research:
William Knowlton Zinsser (born October 7, 1922), a writer, editor, and teacher. His 18 books, which range in subject from music to baseball to American travel, include several widely read books about writing. On Writing Well: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction , first published in 1976, has sold almost 1.5 million copies. He began his career as a journalist for the New York Herald Tribune, where he worked as a feature writer, drama editor, film critic, and editorial writer, and has been a longtime contributor to leading magazines. Throughout the 1970s, Zinsser taught writing at Yale where he was master of Branford College. Now teaches at The New School and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
Many high school teachers have incorporated Zinsser’s writing into their lesson plans. Some teachers even go as far as to tell their students to “Zinsser” their work (Zinsser used as a verb meaning to take the clutter out of their essays).
