After 23 years in Berkeley, Wilderness Exchange has closed. With the friendliest sales staff, its no surprise they lasted 20 years across the street from REI! On both visits we showed up close to closing time and I of course ran around taking pictures rather than shop. Well the 3rd time I showed they had closed but an employee was selling his collection in the lot. There were new & used tents in all shapes and sizes. I was pondering this 3-man vintage North Face tent in the shape of a VW bus! There were plenty of The North Face, Patagonia and Dana Design bags and jackets. Looking at kayaks, canoes and outdoor equipment I was just so happy to be in Northern California- one step closer the great outdoors experience.
Yeah, I need a hair cut, a belt sure… I know. But I also need this jacket Levis is making with the Filson people. WWD broke the news this morning, However…I’m the first to actually get hands on a sample.
Ladies & Gents this is Aylin Beyce; who designed the collection along with top gun Carl Chiara. Although she wears the most insane turquoise eye makeup daily, she is NOT a peacock like yours truly so I had to pretty much beg her to step outside for this.

Country Mart Shoe Repair. Loved the colors! Kinda liked how this couple matched in their chambray or light denim, plastic glasses and same colored shoes.

There was a pop-up event in the backyard of Union & Undefeated. The Generic Man showcased his new collection Generic Surplus; ARMY vs. NAVY, their first collaboration with Undefeated. Limited to 300 pairs. Handcrafted from vintage military textiles.

Tucked away in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood is Al’s Attire. At first glance I thought it was a custom shoe maker but after a look inside you can see Al makes shirt, pants, hats and lots of crazy stuff.. I love a retail space thats trapped in time, old hat boxes decorating the walls etc…Thats Al in the denim coveralls. While I dont love everything, I love that he sews everything right there and shapes & blocks hats!
Kurt hit me up a while back and we have been exchanging emails and pleasantries ever since. He very humbly wrote telling me he enjoys drawing the characters on my site. I figured someone who enjoys my subjects and their kits as mush as I do must be cool. Then the mail arrived

On his most recent drawing trip to New York (he brings his students along!) to meet with some illustrators and artists/designers I had the honor of finally meeting Kurt. In the short time we had together I flipped through 3 of the heavy books he had carried along and snapped just a few of his amazing sketches.
Not sure this fellas from my site, but he is special! Kurt is just awesome.

Former Mt. Rainier climbing guide, Kurt has been art director, designer and now illustrator as well as teacher of drawing and illustration at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. A modern day Magellan with a Micron or possibly Lewis or Clark in a Land Rover; bouncing towards the southern tip of Patagonia with a cheese sandwich and bottle of water tossed into a shoulder bag filled with drawing supplies… few artists have been able to capture the beauty, history, and happiness of the outdoor lifestyle as Kurt has.
