Every morning I chat with a very friendly fella, a retired merchant marine named Buddy. Buddy is a neighborhood fixture, hangs outside a local coffee spot and I can count on seeing him in a different patagonia pullover with a different colored turtleneck and hat every day. With each day he also introduces me to one of his friends that happen to have stopped for coffee on a bike ride or run. Today it was this cool dude. Training for a 48hr marathon in Arizona! He removed his glove to shake my hand like a true gentleman does. And told me about the gators, how they keep rocks and pebbles out while running. Oh, I obviously took the photo because of the shorts.
Much love from sunny California this morning.
Aside from the many trips my father would take us to Tom Mitchells I think the only time I’ve swung a proper golf club was in 12th Grade at NEw Haven Hebrew Day School where golf was offered as an elective. That was pretty crazy for a Yeshiva and I was thrilled. Unfortunately we never made it to any greens. But this jacket… I have always loved the security guards and their attire at stores like Lionel Kiddie City , Radio Shack or Toys R Us. The burgandy or grey blazer that is made of polyester you can spot 100 ft away… When i began thinking about making clothes I would dream of making this sportcoat in a fine wool, yet still oversized with cheap shiny buttons. That wore off and all I can think about making now is this green version of the same blazer. This guy was wearing it on a casual weekday walking the streets of Manhattan. I love the idea of wearing the navy blazer look (khakis too short, brooks brothers oxford & Bucs) in a odd color like green. And the fact that its THE masters jacket makes it not just security guy or idiot in a navy blazer but a new take on a classic. I think J Press or Hickey Freeman used to make them but today I have only seen them at Mens Wearhouse or other cheezy stores.
Make it & Make one for me!
These were a pair of standard issued Dockers K1 khaki trousers before Michael got at them. I met up with my friend for lunch yesterday and he had his pre pebble beach us open look working. Its San Francisco so a corduroy blazer is completely acceptable I might add. He is also the most adventurous straight guy I know when it comes to dressing. He is the coolest dad I know. His wife and kids are pretty rad as well!
Dude is like 80 years young and training for marathons. Made the Japan and UsA flags himself. The hair net and glasses kill me. But check his waistline!
I was excited to be able to visit the archive collection that has just been brought over from Chicago.
It's a hundred years of Hickey Freeman and Hart Schaffner Marx artwork, marketing materials,
memorabilia etc.
Hart Marx owns both Hickey Freeman and Hart Schaffner Marx brands. They bought Hickey Freeman from the heirs in the 1960's and Hart schaffner Marx was one of their original brands. they were three men who started the company. mr. marx. mr schaffner and mr. hart. immigrants – the classic story. the new company is Hart Marx LLC and is based in New York with manufacturing outside of Chicago and in Rochester. The Hart Schaffner Marx stuff was sent to NY from the Chicago office when they consolidated from 3 floors to one floor. The Hickey Freeman archives was sent from the factory in Rochester. Both brands have dressed a long list of politicians such as Eisenhower, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Ronald Reagan – Colin Powell. Obama is the newest to wear Hart Schaffner Marx and VP Joe Biden wore Hickey Freeman at the inauguration this year.
